Birthday Mystery Quilt - Squeezing in Some Extras

The days before the holidays have been busy.  With meal planning, friend and family visitations, and travel, I had to set the next new blocks, of the birthday quilt, aside.  Although I've been busy with other things, I can't stop thinking about the quilt layout.

I found some time to gather up my Birthday blocks and organize the rows for the on-point quilt layout.

Here are some different variations of the on-point layout.

I'm thinking of assembling mine without the borders but using a darker blue for the binding.

I have also noticed the weekly blocks, that were shown on the blog, are not identical to the blocks that are shown in the quilt layout.  For example:

These differences may be minor, but I had tried, really hard, to duplicate the weekly blocks, so that my quilt will looks as close as possible to Laundry Basket Quilts' finished quilt.  I may be the only person who will notice that detail.

Now, I'm getting back into finishing the last blocks and three additional heart blocks.

Birthday Mystery Quilt - Block 51 - Part 1

I'm having to complete some of the last Christmas gifts, so the Birthday blocks are put on hold.  All I have to show is my drafted block.

In the last Quilting Window video (Laundry Basket Quilts' weekly YouTube video), the last of the Birthday blocks were shown, as well as some finished layouts.

My drafted block for the last of the Birthday blocks.

And layouts of the finished quilts.

Once all the Christmas gifts are opened, I will post photos the handmade gifts I have made.  And once the Christmas activity has settled down, I will dive back into the Birthday blocks.  I can't wait!

Birthday Mystery Quilt - Block 50

I can't believe there is only 3 more Tuesdays left in 2024!  When this Birthday Quilt-Along started in January 2024, it seemed to be long, ongoing endeavor.  How time flies, especially when it's so much fun!!

As I usually do, I'll draft the block onto paper.  I drew some directional lines on the some of the triangles and trapezoids to match the fabric used.

This block came together simply.  The only frustration is the points in the center of the block.  I can't ever get that perfect!

Birthday Mystery Quilt - Block 49

I was a little excited when I first saw this week's block.  I love intricate quilts with small pieces, as in miniature quilts. I was so eager to start this block.

From Laundry Basket Quilts blog

This block consists of 83 pieces, and I used 18 fabrics!

I've been seeing, on a Facebook group, that a lot of people have been having a problem with the block resulting in 6 1/2 inches (6 inch finished).  Their blocks were coming out larger.  With the little squares on-point and some bias seams, it can make it a bit difficult on getting each sewn piece perfect.

When I get a more complicated block, I will draft it out, to scale.

I can use my ruler to see what the best measurement to use to cut the piece.  In the blog, it says to cut the little squares at 1 1/4 inches (3/4 inches finished).  My drafted measurement came to approximately 1 3/16 inches square (11/16 inch finished).

The difference of a 1/16th of an inch, in each square, can make a big enough difference in making the finished measurement of 6 inches.

Although this block did cause some frustration, it is my kind of block.  It took a little bit more time in construction. The last birthday block that caused me this much grief, for me, was birthday block 33.

Birthday Mystery Quilt - Block 48

Due to a Thanksgiving hiatus, I'm a little late in posting this week's block.

This block was fairly simple.  I like how the blue rectangles frame the block.  Each of the fabrics, except the solid light background, were directional.  Those took a little bit longer to cut.
