Birthday Mystery Quilt - Block 13

It was Tuesday and Laundry Basket Quilts issued their next Birthday block.

 My block 13

From Laundry Basket Quilts blog

This block was a bit of a surprise, in that it didn't include a light background fabric (I was mistaken as the Valentine's Day block didn't have that fabric, either).  We've almost gone through all the fabrics from the Cocoa Blue collection.  There's just a few left that we haven't used yet.

Farm Girl Vintage - Completed Reveal

The day is here!  I have finally completed my Farm Girl Vintage quilt-top!

I am so happy with this quilt.  I wish I didn't wait so long to complete it.  I love the bright colors of Lori Holt's fabrics and the whimsical nature of each block.  I've always viewed her blocks with a smile on my face.   Now, I have one of my own.

I still have a lot of fabric left from this quilt.  I may have to use it in another Lori Holt quilt!

Maybe in a Sew Scrappy Spools quilt?

Or perhaps, in her Cozy Cottage mini quilt?

A Valentine's Day Pillow - Part Four

It's a bit late.  It is past February 14th, Valentine's Day, and I'm still finishing my Valentine's Day project, the Love Notes pillow.

This last weekend, it was spring break and we had to drive our son back to college.  Sitting in the passenger seat, I needed a project to work on for that long drive.  I decided to bring my Love Notes pillow.

In the pattern, big hand-stitched quilting was used.  I marked the stitch lines with my Frixion pen and used DMC pearl cotton embroidery thread for the stitching.

The red hand stitching will give the pillow just enough "pop" once it is finished.

Farm Girl Vintage - Outer Borders

I am in the final stretch of my quilt.  I'll be adding the borders soon.  In the instructions, it is constructed using a straight border.  I thought I would use scalloped border.

I have never made a quilt with a scalloped border.  Maybe I should have practiced with a smaller project? Will it be difficult to bind?  I will soon find out!

I had used my handy-dandy Frixion pen to mark my quilt.  I used one of my dinner plates for the curve.

If I change my mind, later, after it's quilted, I can still change it to a straight border.

Birthday Mystery Quilt - Block 12

This Tuesday, we were introduced to the twelfth Birthday block.

  My Block 12

From Laundry Basket Quilts blog

I've been seeing a lot of people making several blocks in different colorways.  They are so beautiful.  I'm guessing they will be making more than one quilt.  I'd like to do this myself, but I have too many quilts to catch up with.

Farm Girl Vintage - Body Completed

All the blocks and sashing are together. The body of the quilt is completed.

I'm trying my best to not scrutinize over the fabrics and colors I had used in this quilt.  I'm going to find errors that many other people may not see.  I just need to enjoy the scrappiness of the quilt.  If I decide to make chances in it, I may never get it finished.

Now to add the borders!

Farm Girl Vintage - Reassembling of Colors - Part 2

I took a short break from my Farm Girl Vintage quilt.  I had to set it aside and so that I wouldn't look at the blocks.  Hopefully, I can see it at a new point of view.

I had to decide not to keep dissecting the quilt apart.  If I reconstructed every block, that had a matching fabric in its neighboring block, I could be changing most of the blocks.  I might as well make another quilt.

I did change the greens in this series of blocks.  I think I continually used this green fabric because it was the darkest of the greens I that in my Lori Holt stash - and I did like it a lot!  I switched them out with another fabric, with a lighter green shade.

Altogether, with the fabric change, it doesn't look so flawed, in my opinion.

I'm not going to change any more of the blocks.  I may be the only one who will see the duplication of the fabrics, since I am my worst critic.

Next, I'll be putting together the sashing between the rows.  I'll have to be more diligent in making sure I don't do the same thing with the cornerstone fabrics.  This seems like a never-ending dilemma!

Farm Girl Vintage - Piecing the Inner Border

Since I had given myself a break from the body of this quilt, I decided that I could start on the borders.  The red triangles, in the inner border, will accent the yellow fabric of the outer border really well.

A total of 106 red triangles.

I had started this quilt in 2020, after my knee surgery.  I don't know, exactly, why I had stopped working on it.  It wasn't until this last October that I unpacked it and started working on it again.  To my amazement, I had a lot of the pieces already measured and cut.  I had all the triangles ready for piecing, as well as the white border strips!  I appreciate the extra work I was able to accomplish early on, so that I had less work now.

Birthday Mystery Quilt - Block 10

It is finally the tenth week, with the 10th Birthday block.

 My block 10

From Laundry Basket Quilts blog

I am now caught up with the Laundry Basket Quilts blog.  The next block will be the 11th block and I'll be up to date with their posts for each of their blocks.  They post a new block every Tuesday and I'll be posting my 11th block soon after that Tuesday.

Birthday Mystery Quilt - Block 9

It is now the ninth of March, with the 9th block of the Birthday quilt.

It makes me happy that this is another block with taupe.  I'd like to see if there will be a block made up mostly of tans and taupes.

Birthday Mystery Quilt - Bonus Block 2

Valentine's Day fell during the seventh week of the Birthday blocks.  Edyta surprised us with a bonus block made up of hearts.

 My Bonus Block 2

From Laundry Basket Quilts blog

The first bonus block was assembled using machine applique.  With this block, I used hand applique.

It wasn't until I photographed the block that I realized that some of the hearts were appliqued in the wrong spots.  I hope it doesn't cause a problem later.

Birthday Mystery Quilt - Block 7

For the seventh day of March, here is the seventh birthday block.

My block 7

From Laundry Basket Quilts blog

I like this block because it is the first that uses the "cocoa" color in the blocks.  The prior blocks mainly used the blues from the Cocoa Blue fabric collection.  I'm looking forward to using more of the taupe colors.

Birthday Mystery Quilt - Block 6

It is the sixth day of March and here we have the sixth Birthday Mystery block.

My block 6

From Laundry Basket Quilts blog

I enjoyed this block because it combines a few different quilt block styles.  It has a nine-patch in the center that is set on point.  It is then bordered on the edges with triangles, to finish it with sawtooth stars.

Birthday Mystery Quilt - Bonus Block 1

During the fourth week of the Birthday Mystery Quilt-along, Edyta added a surprise block on her actual birthday, January 25.  This block had an added bonus of using our applique skills.  I had machine-appliqued this block together.

Birthday Mystery Quilt - Block 4

Today is the fourth day of March and here is the fourth block of Edyta Sitar's Birthday Mystery Quilt-along.

I've thought to myself, "How intriguing would it be, to fussy-cut the fabrics, to make an exact replica of the block shown in the example?"  I'm a bit demented!

Birthday Mystery Quilt - Block 3

It is day three and this is Block 3.

My Block 3

From Laundry Basket Quilts blog

My corner blocks look a bit cock-eyed.  I may have to recut new squares and make sure that the cuts are perfectly parallel to the stripe.

Farm Girl Vintage - Reassembling of Colors

I'm a little frustrated.  I constructed each block, one by one, with a scrappy look.  I didn't sew them in a particular order.  I tried to pick fabric and the colors close to the ones shown in the Farm Girl Vintage book.

Once I had the rows laid out, I could see what the quilt was going to look like, once it was put together.

But now, I see that there are some blocks, side-by-side, are using the same fabric.  It may not be a big deal, but I wanted a different array of fabrics used, to give a scrappy, bright and colorful look to the quilt.  With a group of blocks sharing the same fabric, that are right next to each other, may not give that image.

In one particular area, I had used a green fabric with a flowerpot print.  I had used it in five adjacent blocks.

I might feel a little bit better if I changed the fabric in the Pie Cherries and the Pinwheels block.  That would mean another meeting with Mr. Ripper. : (

With the sashing added and more of a separation between the blocks, would it look less apparent?  Am I the only one who sees it as an eyesore?

I'm going to have to set this quilt aside for a while, and then I can look at it with a new eye.

Birthday Mystery Quilt - Block 2

It's the second day of March, and here is the second block of the Birthday quilt.

I'm going to attempt to post a block a day until I'm caught with the new block updates at  Laundry Basket Quilts.  Then, I can make weekly posts, along with their blog.  This will be fun!!

Birthday Mystery Quilt - Block One

March is here and I've started Laundry Basket Quilts' Birthday Mystery Quilt!  And since my birthday is in March, I thought it would be a good time to start.

My block 1

From Laundry Basket Quilts blog

I have pieced the blue fabric differently.  Edyta's fabric has its lines running vertically.  With mine, the left and right sides of the block has its lines running vertically and top and bottom has its lines running horizontally.  I hope that slight change doesn't mess up things in the final assembly of the quilt.
