Baby Tahoe is Finished

We are finally here!  The Baby Tahoe quilt top is finished!

Since this quilt is a smaller version of the original Tahoe quilt, I was fairly surprised with how well it came together.  Don't get me wrong, the tiny 3/8-inch diamonds were a chore to line up.  I'm proud of myself for not giving up, when it got frustrating.

My Baby Tahoe quilt top measures 32 1/2 x 32 1/2 inches square, compared to the Tahoe quilt, which measures at 84 1/2 x 84 1/2 inches square.  Although it's not a miniature sized quilt, it is approximately a third of the size of the original.

Did I come close to replicating it?

I had placed a dime, to show just how little the 3/8-inch diamond is.

I have purchased the batting and I'm hoping to be able to get the backing fabric today.  Now, to figure how I'll quilt it.

Color Matching Dilemna

I am really enjoying how my little Tahoe quilt is coming together.  I was laying out the first few of the wedges, when I realized that I didn't like how some of the darker blue shades were matching.  

In the photo, it may look like the lighting may have darkened the blues in the center of the quilt.  When the blues are placed side-by-side, it is a tad bit darker.  The first, center diamond was the only diamond where this blue was used.

The first diamonds were made with some of the Linen Texture fabrics I had in my stash.  Once I had them stitched together, I was in love.  I had to make more, so I ordered more blue and cream/beige fat quarters.  I tried to match the colors the best as I could.

It looks like I'm going to have to replace it with the blue used in the other diamonds.  I'm going to be spending time with Mr. Ripper for a while. : (

How Does It Look?

I'm in the final stretch of the Baby Tahoe quilt.  I'll have each of the wedges pieced together with the background fabric.

I had to layout the pieces to see if my miniature quilt looks like the original Tahoe quilt.

How close do you think it resembles the original?  I'll have a better idea once it's pieced together.

Baby Tahoe Quilt - Diamond #13

Happy New Year!  And it's time to get back to my Baby Tahoe quilt.

I am now at Diamond #13.

I don't know what it is about these diamonds, I just can't stop making them.  Even if, there are other things that have to be done, I've got to find the time to make another set of diamonds.

Zombie Diamonds

Baby Tahoe Quilt - Diamonds #11 and 12 - Halfway Done!

We're halfway done!  With 24 sets of diamonds to sew together for this Tahoe quilt, we are officially halfway there.  I have completed Diamond #11.

Baby Tahoe Quilt - Diamond #10

I've just completed another set of diamonds.  I have noticed that the last group of 4 diamonds (#'s 5, 6. 7, and 8) are very similar to this group of 4 (#'s 9, 10. 11, and 12).

 

As soon as I get Diamond #12 sewn together, I'll plan on laying them all out to see how close they resemble the original Tahoe quilt.

Baby Tahoe quilt - Diamond #9

Although this isn't how these diamonds are placed in the quilt, I love how the small blue diamonds make up a circle when it's laid out.

This diamond is almost an exact duplicate to Diamond #5.  The way I had pieced them together, it had made them mirrored opposites.  I'm pretty sure I could have pieced them all the same way.

Baby Tahoe - Diamonds #7 and 8

I know that I said that I was going to take a short break from this Baby Tahoe quilt to work more on the Farm Girl Vintage quilt.  I tend to get so fascinated in a new project, that I leave behind a project that I was previously working on.  I don't want to do to this time.

Before I return back to the Farm Vintage quilt, I needed to finish the diamonds that I had already started.

More Baby Tahoe Quilt - A Big Distraction

I feel like I have to keep my hands busy, with something sewing.  My Baby Tahoe quilt has caused an interruption in my progress in my Farm Girl Vintage quilt.  The diamonds have been piecing together rather fast.  

I had planned on sewing each set of diamonds every week for 24 weeks.  By taking it slow, there's no rush in complete the quilt.  I'm enjoying it so much, I'm ahead of schedule! I recently finished with the sixth diamond, which puts me about a month ahead of schedule!

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to set the diamonds aside and work on more of my Farm Girl blocks.

Here is diamond # 5.  I love the tiny blue diamonds.

It will be difficult to take a short break from the diamonds.

Baby Tahoe quilt - Diamonds #3 & 4

The diamond #3 is very similar to #2.  The long blue strip along one side is placed on the opposite side.  

These tiny diamonds are fairly easy to sew together.  In my opinion, the stitching is the most time consuming.  I used a fairly slow stitch speed, so that I can keep the seams straight.  If I veer off a little bit, it could distort the overall shape of the finished diamond shape. 

Although it's just the a few of the diamonds that are made, I hope they all will assemble together properly and not look crooked.

I couldn't wait to make another diamond, so here is diamond # 4.

I had to lay out the first four diamonds to see what they look like.  This is just the start of this mini quilt, but I love the way it looks so far!!

Baby Tahoe - Diamond #2

There is nothing like the feeling of new fabric arriving in the mail!  The excitement of starting another project.  My fabric for Baby Tahoe quilt arrived yesterday.  It was a couple of days late, so I was anxiously waiting for it to arrive.

I'm planning on making the blue version of the Tahoe quilt.  I had chosen eight Linen Texture fabrics, four for the blue and four for the cream.

The Tahoe quilt I'm wanting to create is the blue version.  In the image used on their website, it is made up using fabrics from the Bluebird collection.  With the diamonds being so small in size, I was worried if each of the printed fabrics would have a cohesive color theme. 

With a diamond the size of 3/8 of an inch, it would of an unpredictable color shade that would come through with the print.  Here's a few examples with the different fabrics:

I'm afraid that once the fabric is cut, the color shade will jump around.  That may cause the quilt to not have the look that I want.  That's the reason why I had chosen to use the Linen Texture fabric.  Without the print, each diamond cut from the fabric will be the same.  

I had to draw up a color comparison sheet.  I could visually see the shades of blue and cream, in each individual diamond block.  And then I labeled each fabric with a number.  

And here we are!  We have Diamond #2!

These small blocks are sewing up quicker than I thought they would.  It takes time to cut them out, so that the angles will accurate.  I keep stitches slow, so that the 1/4-inch seams stay consistent.  I can' wait for the next diamond!

I Couldn't Help Myself!

I have no self-control!  Please don't hate me.  I may need help!

As of today, it's been 15 days of Tahoe Quilt Along (through Laundry Basket Quilts). Two weeks and one day of diamond block construction.  I did it!  I couldn't resist.  I'm starting a small Tahoe quilt.

Another one of my UFOs is the Illuminate quilt.  Yes, it's another Laundry Basket quilt!

It is made using a fabric line named Linen Texture.  It is a textural print made to look like linen.  It's not a solid, but it can be used as a solid.  And I love that!

I had gotten a jelly roll and a layer cake of these fabrics, to use in the Illuminate quilt.  I know I should not have, but I stole some of those fabrics to use in this Tahoe quilt.

They are small and so cute!

I think I'll call it Baby Tahoe.

My thoughts are that I would like to work on a diamond block a week.  Then, maybe, it won't consume so much of my time that I can't finish other projects.  There will be 24 diamond blocks (8 of each diamond block).  That will give me a deadline of May 2024.

Now, I have to order some more fabric for this quilt and to replace the fabric from the other quilt!
